...And an entrepreneur

Dear Maker,

What if I told you that you could?

I know that glittering thing you see in your mind’s eye when the house is quiet.

As a seasoned business owner, I have experienced just about every kind of victory, misstep and hard-earned growth there could be on an entrepreneurial journey. These past 25 years have been exactly what I dreamed they would be, and yet absolutely nothing like I expected all at the same time! As I enter into what seems to be a crescendo in my career owning Amy Howard at Home, I can’t help but look down the roads I’ve traveled and see very distinctive markers that have made all the difference in both my personal life and professional career. Burning in my heart is to share these golden truths with you, in hopes that you too, will one day experience the blossoming of your own dreams.

In recent years, something quite phenomenal has taken place. Lovingly referred to by some as the Maker Movement--creative men and women are blooming in studios and storefronts, armed with their craft and a laptop. And dovetailing this, our culture has warmed to the idea that owning a quality, unique item--hand-made with love, is a far more fulfilling purchase than cheap factory-made relics shipped from who knows where (for a price we’d rather not know). Every one of us is capable of “making” something, of course, but a true maker carries an unshakable conviction to share their creative notions and compositions with the world with open hands. For us, it is an honor to make something beautiful that both fills a personal creative need while serving a vital purpose in society.

I can confidently say, not only is your passion worth sharing, but a waiting market is ready and eager to have you!

For the next few months, I want to walk beside you as your guide and biggest cheerleader. For what?

To guide you in owning your very own creative business.

Whether you’re a blogger, local shop owner, or have just begun to tease the idea of making a living doing what you love, I have a career’s worth of principles to share with you. One of your first steps in this walk will be to first acknowledge your talents, and then to understand them. Throw your shoulders back and close your eyes. Your greatest chances of being a successful maker lies within your wealth self-knowledge and quiet confidence.

First on my list is a short personality test. To this goal of self-awareness, I would like to challenge you to take a free DISC personality assessment. This is not for my benefit, as I receive no compensation--but for you, for your edge, so that you’ll see your strengths and characteristics laid out before your eyes. Your task this week is to pick up ownership of your unique mix of giftings and traits by taking the DISC. Rub into your temples, that you are a creative individual, and be thankful for all the opportunities that come with your rare traits.

Dear maker, you are an entrepreneur! Your rare gifting set is waiting to be developed!

Every week, I will journey alongside you to break down my latest labor of love, my new book, A Makers Guide: A Letter and Roadmap to Creative Entrepreneurs.
